Job Overview:
Under the direction of the Surgery Director and / or Charge Nurse, performs a variety of duties, preparing for, assisting during, and cleaning up after surgical procedures. Provides patient care in accordance with hospital policies, procedures, and standards of care
Job Requirements:
Successfully completed a surgical assistant course from an approved school and has passed the National Surgical Assistant Association’s official certification examination; CME units every 24 months through NSAA approved educational programs. Minimum of 2 years of operative experience since certification preferred.
Job Responsibilities:
• Basic computer skills (Windows/keyboarding)
• Ability to effectively communicate with all levels of internal and external customers, including medical
staff, clinical personnel, patients and families, outside agencies and members of the community.
• Job requires performing a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another of a different nature
without loss of efficiency or composure (multi-tasking).
• Job requires performing under stress when confronted with emergency, critical, unusual, or dangerous
situations or in situations, in which working speed and sustained attention to detail are essential.
Essential Functions appear in boldface:
1. Performs as needed, all duties described in the Certified Surgical Technologist job description.
2. Practices under the supervision and direction of the surgeon during the intraoperative phase of the
perioperative experience. Does not function con-currently as a scrub technologist.
3. Act as first or second assistant to the surgeon having extensive knowledge of anatomy and physiology.
4. Scrub for operative procedure.
5. Assist the surgeon in draping of the patient.
6. Retract tissue and exposes operating field area during operative procedures.
7. Clamp and tie vessels to control bleeding during surgical entry
8. Keep the operative site dry.
9. Afford the surgeon the best possible exposure of the anatomy incident to the operation.
10. Assist the surgeon in identifying any structure, which should not be ligated and keeps these structures from the operative site by retraction.
11. Prepared to anticipate the moves of the surgeon.
12. Knowledge in all surgical procedures sufficient enough to assist the surgeon in any way.
13. Know all instruments used in any procedure.
14. Assist in closure of the incision including tying off bleeders, applying sutures and wound dressings, and performs any and all tasks required by the surgeon, incident to the particular surgical procedure.
15. Maintains a safe environment for patient and personnel by utilizing and enforcing principles of infection control and safety practices, including universal precautions.
16. Follows appropriate policies/procedures for operating equipment including sterilizers.
17. Must be able to work and communicate with physicians, staff and other departments in a courteous, diplomatic matter during high stress situations.
18. Must be able to take on-call duties with 30 minutes response time.
19. Performs job responsibilities in a manner consistent with CMH’s Behavioral Expectations and Service Commitments.

21. Performs a variety of routine duties.
22. Maintains order in the work area during procedures.
