Job Overview:

 

This position applies the nursing process in providing direct and indirect holistic care to patients and their families. This position also collaborates, in a collegial manner, with physicians and other health care team members in meeting the patient's/resident's needs. Under the guidance of the Director and/or Charge Nurse, the Registered Nurse, Surgery/OR performs a variety of duties as a scrub nurse and circulating nurse. Utilizes the nursing process in the implementation of the medical plan of care for patients. Provides patient care in accordance with hospital and nursing policies, procedures, and standards of care.

 

 

Job Requirements:

Education:

Associate's Degree or Diploma in Nursing (Required)
Registered Nurse (Required)

Certified Nurse-Operating Room (CNOR) credential (Preferred)

 

 

Job Responsibilities:

Prepares operating room to provide equipment and supplies based on patient needs.

Transport patients to the operating room after ensuring all required tests, documentation, etc. have been completed.

Works collaboratively with team members to ensure patient safety and optimal outcomes.

Makes accurate and ongoing assessments of patient’s status and responds appropriately.

Assesses physiological health status of patient and identifies needs.

Provides education and emotional support to patients and family based on identified needs.

Organizes and directs patient care utilizing the nursing process and critical thinking. Works with team members to establish goals and prioritize activities.

Opens instruments and supplies to the sterile as needed.

Operates equipment, as applicable.

  • Acquires additional supplies and equipment during operation as required.

  • Monitors correct usage of equipment and supplies.

Performs a variety of treatments and procedures as needed including but not limited to sponge, sharps, and instrument counts, administration of drugs and solutions, and insertion of urinary catheters.

Assesses, monitors, plans, and evaluates the patient’s condition on arrival and on an ongoing basis throughout the patient’s stay.

Documents all care provided utilizing the nursing process and in compliance with hospital policies and procedures.

Handles operative specimens appropriately.

Follows appropriate policies and procedures for operating equipment, including flash sterilizer.

Reports unusual and/or emergent patient or personnel situation in a timely manner to direct supervisor and other members of the health care team as appropriate. Completes follow-up action as directed. Communicates changes in patient’s condition and/or procedure that may influence staffing requirements.

Maintains a safe and orderly environment utilizing principles of safety and infection control, including universal precautions.

Performs nursing actions that demonstrate accountability.

  • Must be available for on-call duties; must be able to arrive in the department within 20 minutes of notification.

  • Supervises activities of non-professional personnel in department.

Maintains competency through licensure requirements, division and departmental core competencies, and attends other programs as appropriate for job responsibilities.

Participates in the department’s quality assessment and improvement plan as directed by Department Director or designee.

The staff member must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care based on the physical, psycho/social, educational, safety, and related patient needs appropriate to the age of the patients served.

Demonstrates commitment to the Department’s goals and to the organization’s mission, vision, and values.

Performs job responsibilities in a manner consistent with CMH’s Behavioral Expectations and Service Commitments.

Performs all other related duties as requested or required by Director and/or Charge Nurse.
