On the Renal Unit at Good Samaritan Hospital, the care team specializes in supporting adult and geriatric patients through some of life’s toughest challenges. Patients arrive with a range of medical conditions such as complications from diabetes, pneumonia, cellulitis, and encephalopathy, while others are recovering from renal and urology surgeries like nephrectomies, prostatectomies, or TURP procedures. The team also manages patients with continuous bladder irrigation (CBI) and provides specialized care for those requiring peritoneal dialysis—handled by trained nurses from the unit, regardless of where the patient is in the hospital. The Renal Unit houses 22 beds, offering a blend of advanced medical care and a personalized approach. Nurses on this unit work 12-hour shifts, with scheduling designed to fit their lives through self-scheduling. Schedules are built in 6-week increments, incorporating every third weekend and a holiday rotation, with weekend program options available for added flexibility. New nurses are welcomed with a 6-week competency-based orientation led by experienced preceptors. Training includes specialized education in renal care and peritoneal dialysis, ensuring every nurse feels confident in managing the unique needs of these patients. Day shifts maintain a nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:4-5, while nights are staffed at 1:5-6, providing a supportive environment where teamwork thrives.
