The Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nurse is a registered nurse who provides acute and rehabilitative care for people with selected disorders of the gastrointestinal, genitourinary, and integumentary systems. The components in this position include education, consultation, counseling, research, and administration.

 

Minimum Requirements:

  • Education: Bachelor's Degree Nursing and Certification in Wound, ostomy and continence care or certification in wound and/or ostomy.
  • Licensure/Certification: Certification through The Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nursing Certification Board (CWOCNCB®),  BLS/CPR (Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers) and Registered Nurse in the State of OH.
  • Experience: 2 years of wound care experience as registered nurse required.
  • Specialized Knowledge: Advanced knowledge of wound, ostomy, and continence nursing; Knowledge of adult learning principles.

 

Job Outcomes:

  • Conducts thorough, individualized needs assessment for patients with wound, ostomy, or continence problems with the participation of the patient, family, or support systems, when appropriate, prior to the development of the education plan and intervention.
  • Develops a written educational plan from information obtained from the needs assessment and based on the components of the educational process: assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Strives to create an educational setting conducive to patient/family learning and adequate resources to facilitate the learning process.
  • Participates in ongoing evaluation of patient's progress related to the treatment plan.
  • Collaborates with the multidisciplinary team of health care professionals and integrates WOC knowledge and skills to provide comprehensive educational experiences for the nursing/medical staff throughthe use of: current literature review, clinical rounds, orientation programs, in-house/local/national lectures and publication media to attain current knowledge and competence in WOC care.
