GENETIC COUNSELOR: Licensed Genetic Counselor (LGC) functions independently in direct patient care and serves as genetic expert within the multidisciplinary health team. Genetic Counselor demonstrates an advanced degree of clinical expertise is medical genetics serving as a resource for physicians and clinical team. Genetic Counselor demonstrates an advanced level of clinical knowledge in medical genetics, communication, interdisciplinary collaboration, professionalism, and systems-based practice. Certified by the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) and the Licensed through the Ohio State Medical Board, the Genetic Counselor works independently under a documented collaborative agreement with appropriate physician(s). Genetic Counselor’s clinical responsibilities include the following components: elicitation of medical and family history, assessment of patient risk for genetic conditions, identification and coordination of genetic laboratory tests and other diagnostic studies necessary for diagnosis of inherited conditions, interpretation molecular genetic tests in the context of patient medical and family history, and the translation of complex genetic diagnosis to patient, at risk family members and managing healthcare providers. Genetic Counselor works in collaboration with physicians to develop treatment plan options, implement the treatment plan and follow-up/evaluation. Genetic Counselor is responsible for the evaluation of patient and family psychosocial response and provides initial treatment through patient-centered counseling and guidance. Genetic Counselor serves as a patient advocate by identifying and referring to appropriate internal and/or community resources to meet patient and family needs. Genetic Counselor’s non-clinical responsibilities include the following components: (1) Genetic Counselors are clinical experts who design, implement and evaluate patient-specific and population-based programs of care with an emphasis on personalized medicine. (2) Genetic Counselor develops and delivers genetic-focused education services to a broad audience including individual patients and physicians, groups of learners, and the community-at-large. Genetic education is delivered with a multi-media approach. (3) Genetic Counselor is responsible for serving as a liaison between advanced genomic information and clinical care, which involves identifying and evaluating innovative technologies, recommending appropriate use of specialized external laboratory genetic testing, developing internal lab and clinical decision support processes, negotiating billing processes, payor contracts, and prior authorizations, and engaging internal Information Systems improvement projects. (4) Genetic Counselor will develop research collaboration and participate in personalized medicine initiatives. (5) To measure and ensure quality improvement, Genetic Counselor will participate in quality assurance projects and department improvements. (6) Genetic Counselor completes relevant continuing education to ensure his/her licensure renewal and Board re-certification. (7) Genetic counselor mentors and supervises current and/or prospective Genetic Counseling students.



EDUCATION: Master's Degree Other Genetic Counseling/Medical Genetics Other Must obtain American Board of Genetic Counseling certification within 24 months of hire date. Must obtain Supervised Practice License within 2 months of hire date. Must be fully licensed by Ohio State Medical Board in Genetic Counseling within 12 months of hire date.
