Laboratory Tech Representative

Job Overview 

This position provides technical support, assistance, and direction for the Lab's Outreach support staff and couriers. This position provides training regarding registration, specimen sorting, receiving, labeling, and test ordering using the HIS, LIS, and other systems. This position sorts, receives, orders, and labels samples. This position organizes reports and supplies to be delivered by the lab couriers, is familiar with client locations, and dispatches couriers for stat and routine pickups. This position coordinates routine and emergency service for lab vehicles and ensures proper reporting of accidents. This position orders collection supplies provided to Outreach clients, organizes inventory in storage room, and monitors supply requests for reasonable usage. This position also assists the Lab's customers and works with the Lab's customer support staff to investigate and resolve issues. This position coordinates the distribution of policies and procedures, documentation of quarterly fire drills, completion of annual mandatory education (AME), and other required activities. This position provides feedback for employee reviews, performance counseling, and service excellence recognition and contributes to special projects as needed.

Work Hours:

  • Full-time | 80 hours per bi-weekly pay period
  • Monday–Friday | 6:00 AM – 2:30 PM
  • Weekend rotation | Every 3rd weekend
  • Holiday rotation | 1 per year

Minimum Required Qualifications

  • Medical technology degree or related field (Equivalent experience accepted in lieu of degree)
  • 2–3 years of experience in laboratory processing within a clinical or diagnostic lab setting
  • Familiarity with lab workflows, medical terminology, and operational best practices
  • Proficient in HIS and LIS systems; strong attention to accuracy in data entry
  • Outstanding organizational and analytical problem-solving abilities, with a proactive mindset and attention to detail
  • Clear and effective communication is essential—candidates must be able to convey information accurately, respectfully, and with appropriate urgency

Key Responsibilities

  • Sorts, receives, registers, orders, labels, and distributes incoming specimens using HIS, LIS, or other systems. Achieves zero mislabelings. Trains Outreach support specialists to perform these tasks, serves as a resource for the staff, and works with department supervisors to direct the daily workflow for the shift. Communicates with Lab's customer support staff, processors, and registrars to investigate and resolve problems.
  • Organizes pickup routes, supplies, and reports for the lab couriers. Dispatches couriers for routine and stat pickups, considering customer satisfaction, priorities, specimen stability, and testing locations. Arranges routine and emergency service for lab vehicles. Ensures that auto accident reporting procedure is followed.
  • Orders supplies provided to customers for the proper collection and transport of specimens. Organizes and maintains inventory of supplies in lab storeroom; fills supply requests from customers and monitors quantities issued for appropriate usage.
  • Coordinates the distribution of policies and procedures to staff; documents quarterly fire drills; compiles QA information and phlebotomy draw logs; ensures that staff completes annual mandatory education (AME) and other required activities. Performs clerical functions as needed (faxing, filing, etc.).
  • Provides supervisor with feedback for employee reviews, performance counseling, and service excellence recognition; contributes to special projects as needed.
